Downfall of Gaia is a German extreme metal band that came together in 2008 when Dominik Goncalves dos Reis and Anton Lisovoj decided to make their music more serious. The two had been writing songs together since 2006, starting with d-beat and crust punk, but in 2008 they began crafting longer, more epic pieces. To mark this shift, they changed their name to Downfall of Gaia—a reference to the Greek goddess of the Earth—because it matched the lyrical and atmospheric direction of their work. That same year, they added guitarist Peter Wolff, whom they had met. The band’s drumming position saw several changes early on: their first drummer was Sven, who was then replaced by Hannes in 2010.
Their first release was a demo called *The Downfall of Gaia* in 2008, followed by a split 7" vinyl with French band Kazan and the tour EP *Salvation in Darkness* in 2009. Their debut studio album, *Epos*, came out in 2010 with help from several independent labels, and Goncalves noted it brought in more doom metal and post-rock elements. In 2011, they put out a split LP with Swedish band In the Hearts of Emperors on Alerta Antifascista Records, Moment of Collapse, and Shove Records. That year, they toured more heavily, playing the East Coast of the United States with Vestiges and touring Europe in October.
By early 2012, the band had finished writing their second album, *Suffocating in the Swarm of Cranes*. Just weeks before they were set to record it, Metal Blade Records reached out, and they signed with the label, leaving their independent partners behind. The album was recorded with Christoph Scheideldorf at ’79 Sound Studio in Cologne, mixed by Jack Shirley at Atomic Garden Studio in the Bay Area, and mastered by James Plotkin. Released in September 2012 in the US and October in Europe, it’s a concept album about a man battling depression and insomnia as he slowly loses his grip on reality. Hannes described the sound as a mix of sludge, black metal, hardcore, screamo, and post-rock, while a Pitchfork review by Kim Kelly noted it leaned more heavily on Isis-style post-metal and mournful black metal than their earlier work, while still keeping traces of Amebix-style crust punk.
