The members of Brutus met playing in different bands around Leuven. Drummer and vocalist Stefanie Mannaerts and bassist Peter Mulders played together in a Refused tribute band, while Mannaerts and guitarist Stijn Vanhoegaerden were both in the band Starfucker since the late 2000s. In 2014 and 2015, Brutus played at festivals such as Pukkelpop, Rock Herk, and Dour Festival, releasing three separate two-song EPs: the first two in 2014 and the third in 2015. Formation from a Web of Leuven Bands

Brutus did not spring into existence as a single, pre-planned unit. Instead, the trio coalesced in 2013 from the overlapping orbit of several local Leuven projects. Drummer-vocalist Stefanie Mannaerts and bassist Peter Mulders had been sharing a stage in Refused Party Program, a tribute act dedicated to performing The Shape of Punk to Come in its entirety. Meanwhile, Mannaerts and guitarist Stijn Vanhoegaerden had been building their musical chemistry together in Starfucker since the late 2000s. These intersecting relationships meant that when the three came together under the Brutus name, they already carried years of shared rehearsal rooms, setlists, and creative friction. The result was a compact three-piece configuration—vocals and drums, guitar, bass—that would go on to define the band's dense, layered sound. Rather than recruiting strangers, Brutus was essentially a consolidation of existing trust and musical vocabulary, giving the group an immediate cohesion that many newly formed bands spend years trying to develop.

From Unsigned to International: The Road to Burst

Before ever stepping into a professional studio, Brutus spent 2014 and 2015 grinding through Belgium's festival circuit, appearing at Pukkelpop, Rock Herk, and Dour Festival while still unsigned. In 2015 they also released a trilogy of two-song EPs, building a small but loyal domestic following. The turning point came in 2016 when the trio traveled to Vancouver to record their debut with producer Jesse Gander, a name already associated with Japandroids and White Lung. Shortly after its release, the band signed with Sargent House, which took over distribution in the United States and globally. To promote the record, Brutus toured alongside labelmates Chelsea Wolfe and Russian Circles and also supported Thrice on their European dates.

A Sound That Refuses a Single Genre

Critics have struggled to pin Brutus into one box, and the band's own influences explain why. They are commonly tagged as post-hardcore, post-metal, and post-rock, but AllMusic's John D. Buchanan argued the music actually weaves together elements of post-rock, mathcore, black metal, and progressive rock. Kerrang! captured the textural range by calling the track "Sugar Dragon" an exercise in slowburning shoegaze euphoria, while Stereogum noted the presence of massive Godspeed You! Black Emperor-style guitar swells paired with even larger Baroness-esque choruses. Mannaerts herself pointed to a wide net of drumming heroes—Ben Koller of Converge, Levon Helm of The Band, Joris Casier of Stake, Taylor Hawkins of Foo Fighters, and John Bonham of Led Zeppelin—while also citing vocal and artistic inspiration from Karin Dreijer, Stevie Nicks, and Emma Ruth Rundle. This eclectic palette, filtered through a tight three-piece format, gives Brutus a sound that shifts between crushing intensity and expansive, atmospheric beauty within a single track.

Adapting, Enduring, and Expanding

Brutus has shown a remarkable ability to adapt to external disruptions while steadily expanding their reach. Their second album, Nest (2019), drew its title from the band's close-knit circle of friends and family, and its promotion included their first United States tour in the fall of that year, with a stop at Deftones' annual Dia de los Deftones festival in San Diego. When the pandemic shuttered live music, the band responded by releasing Live in Ghent in October 2020, a recording of a sold-out May 2019 hometown show. Their planned 2020 Roadburn Festival appearance was cancelled, but they finally made that debut in 2023. That same summer saw them playing Rock am Ring, Rock im Park, Download, Copenhell, Pinkpop, 2000 Trees, and ArcTanGent—a packed schedule underscoring their growing stature. Their albums have charted progressively higher in Belgium (number 30, 4, and 6 respectively), and Unison Life even cracked the German top 75. A 2025 live album, Live in Brussels, signals that the trajectory is still climbing.
