Dirge was formed near Paris in 1994 by Marc T. (guitar/programming) and Laurent P. (vocals/programming). Their early work was in the industrial metal style of Godflesh and Pitchshifter, featuring corrosive guitars, robotic hammerings, and scratching samples. Three demo tapes were recorded during this period. After Laurent's departure, bassist David K. and guitarist Franck T. joined, leading to a noisier, less electronic sound on the debut album Down, Last Level (1998).

In 1999, drummer Alain B. and machine operator Christophe 'Zomb' D. joined, re-humanizing the music with real drums and making it more massive and stifling. The second album Blight And Vision Below A Faded Sun (2000) marked a step toward heavier, more progressive compositions. Further lineup changes brought bassist Christian M. and guitarist Stéphane L. in 2001, and the third album And Shall The Sky Descend (2004) introduced psychedelic elements, including violin, didgeridoo, and female vocals.

The fourth album Wings Of Lead Over Dormant Seas (2007) was a double CD set featuring guest vocals from Nicolas Dick and received notable press, with Terrorizer calling it 'genius.' The fifth album Elysian Magnetic Fields (2011) was highly praised, with Legacy magazine calling it 'remarkable' and Roadburn.com deeming it 'stunning.' After several tours and lineup changes, Dirge joined Debemur Morti Productions and released Hyperion in 2014. The band went on hiatus in March 2019 but later reformed, releasing the album 'Force' in 2024.
